Nebraska football will wrap up spring practice next weekend, and according to head coach Matt Rhule, that will even include some live football after the spring game was canceled.
When you’re Matt Rhule, you can cancel or uncancel the spring game if you want. It won’t include starters or players on the two deep, but players on the edge of the roster will get a chance to play at Lincoln Memorial Stadium for the last time. Rhule also said it can be a chance for those players to showcase themselves.
That will be interesting for fans, although it won’t be televised. However, Nebraska football players have stood out all spring — the practices are more important than the “Spring game” anyway — and here are five Huskers who have improved their stock this spring.
Isaiah Mozee
Nebraska fans have been talking about Cortez Mills and the other wide receivers for months, but another who turned heads this spring was Isaiah Mozee.
Mozee, a four-star recruit once committed to Oregon, was overlooked as the spring started, but he’s made it clear that he will contribute right away as a freshman next season.
Looking at the top six wideouts: Dane Key, Nyziah Hunter, Jacory Barney, Cortez Mills, Mozee, and Janiran Bonner — the Huskers are loaded as they have ever been at wide receiver.
Kwinten Ives
Yes, Nebraska is probably exploring the addition of CharMar Brown. Fans are at least interested, but that doesn’t mean that Ives hasn’t improved this spring. He’s the clear RB2 on the roster right now.
That wasn’t the case before the spring started. He took a step forward. Ives has a lot to prove. We’ll see if any running backs are added, but either way, Ives will get some touches in 2025.
Justin Evans
Simply put, Justin Evans is Nebraska’s best offensive lineman. Elijah Pritchett might be the most important because of how important it is to have a good left tackle; however, having an elite center is a weapon.
We’ll see if Evans can be that. I believe he’s got a shot to earn All-Big Ten honors this season. Still, it was good to see him lock down the starting job. That’s what Nebraska football coaches probably wanted. He’s got two years of eligibility and will be able to build a strong rapport with Dylan Raiola.
Marques Watson-Trent
One of the new arrivals on defense who will play a big role this season is Marques Watson-Trent. He was the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year for a reason, and he’s been impressive this spring.
Vincent Shavers will play a ton inside. Javin Wright should, too, but don’t write off Watson-Trent, who is a tackling machine and has certainly looked like a contributor since arriving in Lincoln.
Jacob Bower
Who knows how much linebacker Jacob Bower will play this season, but he will be a scholarship player. Matt Rhule awarded Bower, a former walk-on with a scholarship, on Friday.
Bower is from California and played in six games last season. There’s a strong chance he will play in every game next season. It feels like Bower will have a role on special teams, and maybe even on defense.
