3 thoughts on Nebraska football landing 5-star Tory Pittman

Nebraska football

With all of the preseason hype surrounding Nebraska football leading up to the 2025 season, it was nice for the program to secure at least one tangible win by landing the commitment of 5-star Tory Pittman.

Pittman is a 6-foot-180-pound safety out of Omaha. He’s ranked 16th overall in the 2027 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, as well as the No. 1 safety.

Pittman announced his commitment via social media on Friday. That was on the heels of several expert projections for the No. 1 in-state recruit in Nebraska to land with the Huskers. He had 17 offers total. LSU was among the top contenders, and here are three thoughts on a huge commitment.

Nebraska football wins an essential recruiting battle

The Huskers don’t get many five-star targets in their own backyard. When that opportunity arises, they have to bring it home, and Matt Rhule did that. The direction of the program and the Rhule were each cited by Pittman, along with the culture, as to why he chose Nebraska.

Some fans have expressed concern about the 2026 class. The ranking could be better. It could also still improve, but this is a sign that Nebraska football recruiting is just fine.

It’s better than fine, actually, with two top-100 commitments already in the 2027 class.

Tory Pittman is an elite prospect

Pittman is ranked as the No. 1 safety, and there is a good reason for that. He had 54 tackles and three interceptions last season as a sophomore. He’s also an impressive athlete with a 23-foot, 4.5-inch long jump. Pittman also ran 11.2 in 2024 as a freshman in the 100.

The Omaha Central product also had 450 receiving yards last season and has upside on that side of the ball, too. He’s going to be an NFL player, and it will be fun to watch him develop over the next two classes.

Nebraska football now has a cornerstone on both sides of the ball. Trae Taylor could end up as a five-star quarterback. Pittman is already a five-star.

The 2027 class could be off the charts

Nebraska football fans have been worried about the 2026 ranking. However, in 2027, the Huskers are ranked seventh right now. It’s very early, but just imagine what will happen if Nebraska wins 9-10 games this season.

Not only will the 2026 class improve, but Rhule will have even more to sell to recruits. The man has landed a slew of top-100 recruits. Nebraska hasn’t landed multiple since the 2024 class, but if the winning follows this fall as expected, it feels like 3-4-5 might be possible.

Rhule just needs to deliver in year three, and this sleeping giant could finally awaken.
