3 takeaways from Nebraska’s overtime win over Iowa

Nebraska basketball’s win over Iowa took longer than it needed to, but it was still one of the sweetest wins of the season for the Huskers.

Not only did they get revenge on the Hawkeyes from the recent 57-52 loss in Iowa City, but the 82-75 overtime win sent the seniors out with a win, Sam Hoiberg included.

Hoiberg led the Huskers with 15 points. He was one of three who scored that number against Iowa, along with Cale Jacobsen and Pryce Sandfort.

Iowa shot 48 percent from the field. It made 11 3-pointers compared to 10 for Nebraska basketball. In the end, Nebraska forced more turnovers and made more free throws, as well as getting a few more clutch plays from guys like Jacobsen.

Here are three takeaways from the 82-75 overtime win over Iowa.

Cale Jacobsen made Iowa pay

The Hawkeyes decided to leave Jacobsen open twice in overtime. He had only made 12 3-pointers in 30 games this season, so it made sense. He’s one of the guys opponents don’t mind shooting the ball.

Yet, Jacobsen is a winner. He proved that again on Sunday. Twice, he delivered in overtime when the game was tied. After the second, Hoiberg, who had the assist the play before, drove to the bucket for two.

That was the beginning of the end.

Nebraska basketball won most of the fundamentals

The Huskers have a formula for winning games. They need to shoot the 3-ball well. They did that. They also won the 2-point battle 62-61 percent. It was essentially a stalemate, but the Huskers had fewer fouls, fewer turnovers, and 27 free-throw attempts to 15. Iowa had more rebounds, but it wasn’t nearly as significant as last time (31-28). The offensive rebounding edge for Iowa was 7-5.

The Huskers will take that, especially forcing 19 turnovers. That effort got them a quad-1 win, second place in the Big Ten, and tied a school record for wins (26).

Sam Hoiberg went out in style

Hoiberg did everything he could to beat Iowa. He led Nebraska basketball in points (15). He also had three rebounds, two assists, and five steals.

The Nebraska guard was whistled for four fouls, but was clutch in overtime. He made 5-of-7 shots, and like many games this season, Nebraska would not have won without Sam Hoiberg.

There are more games to play, but he ended his career inside the Vault in style.
