Nebraska basketball did it again.
Just when you thought that the winning streak and undefeated season were coming to an end, the Huskers proved once again, without a shadow of a doubt, that they are one of the best teams in college basketball.
Trailing Indiana, ranked 26th in the Kenpom rankings, by as many as 16 points in the second half, the Huskers relied on a formula that’s worked all season — stellar 3-point shooting and solid defense.
Indiana shot the ball really well. The Hoosiers just didn’t shoot as well as Nebraska, which made 41 percent of its attempts from beyond the arc for 14. Nebraska basketball won the turnover battle 13-7. That and the stellar perimeter shooting was the difference.
10th-ranked Nebraska is 16-0. They are 5-0 in the Big Ten, and here are three takeaways from the 83-77 win over Indiana.
Jamarques Lawrence was incredible
It felt like every Nebraska player on the floor had a role in this comeback. Lawrence’s was bigger than most, though. The senior guard scored 27 points in 37 minutes. He didn’t come out of the game in the second half and finished with five 3-pointers, five rebounds, three steals, and three assists.
Lawrence and Sam Hoiberg combined for six steals, eight assists, and two turnovers. When they talk about the kind of guard play you need to win in March, that’s what they mean, especially when you consider the team-high 27 from Lawrence, who was unstoppable getting to the paint, scoring 27 points on 13 field goals. Indiana’s leading scorer needed seven more shots to score five more points (32) than Lawrence.
3-point shooting saved the day
Fred Hoiberg said 3-point shooting was a priority this offseason. Well, that focus worked. Pryce Sandfort hit three triples; seven different Huskers made at least one. Three different players made at least two.
The 41-percent effort was particularly impressive against Indiana. The Hoosiers are one of the best teams at limiting 3-point attempts and 3-point makes.
Indiana wasn’t able to do either against Nebraska, which outscored the Hoosiers by nine points at the 3-point line in a six-point win.
Nebraska basketball has been incredible
Nebraska basketball is on its best run in program history. The fact that the Huskers have beaten Illinois, Indiana, Creighton, and Ohio State on the road is impressive. They also beat Oklahoma and Kansas State on a neutral floor.
When the NET rankings are updated on Sunday, the Huskers will be 5-0 in quad-1 games (Indiana, Illinois, Ohio State, New Mexico and Michigan State). They are 4-0 against quad-2 opponents (Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Creighton, and Kansas State) and have four true road wins. Nebraska has eight wins over teams ranked in the top 64 of the NET rankings, and only two of those wins were at home.
