Nebraska football landed a commitment from former Syracuse linebacker Stefon Thompson on Thursday. Thompson made the announcement on X.

This reunites the linebacker with defensive coordinator Tony White. White coached Thompson at Syracuse, where the linebacker transferred from. Thompson appeared in appeared in every game as a redshirt sophomore in 2023. He had 52 tackles, four tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. The linebacker started in the Boca Raton Bowl against South Florida on December 21 and made four tackles.

This is a big cat for Nebraska for all. For one, they needed depth at the linebacker position following the departures of Luke Reimer and Nick Henrich. Thompson fills that void.

What can he bring to Nebraska football?

This also gives Nebraska more depth defensively. When you look at Thompson’s skill set and what he is able to bring to the table, he fits very well in his defense. He is aggressive, and he is not afraid to get in the backfield quickly to make a play.

The addition of Thompson as to what has been a really strong week for Nebraska football in the transfer portal. They have landed five of their transfer targets in the portal, including four in the past week alone. Nebraska set out with the goal of landing impact players and they have been able to do it.

Nebraska football has the 41st overall transfer class ranking in the country per the 247Sports Rankings This is certainly respectable, given that a large part of the 2024 class is focused on high school recruiting.

This addition fills a major void for Nebraska football defensively, and also gives them a bit of experience at the linebacker position. Thompson should be able to fit in with the defense right away, and he fits well into this scheme given his play style. It will be interesting to see if there are any more additions for Nebraska football via the transfer portal, or if Thompson is the final target.
