The Nebraska football head coach said during his press conference that the Huskers aren’t cursed, they just need to play better.

Sometimes, it feels like Nebraska football is cursed. Some have suggested that there is a curse because of the way the Huskers fired Frank Solich or Bo Pelini after nine-win seasons.

However, it’s hard to believe in the supernatural. There is usually a much easier explanation and Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule offered one up on Monday during his weekly press conference.

“We’re not snakebit,” he said. “We’re not unlucky. There’s no curse. You’ve got to play what the defense called… Those near misses are all of our own doing.”

Rhule is right. 100 percent right and Nebraska can’t go around blaming others for their own issues. They need to execute better and as tired as might all be of hearing it, players need to make plays with the game on the line.

Coaches can only do so much. That doesn’t mean all coaches are created equal. Some are better at putting their players in a position to succeed. Nebraska hasn’t been lately, but as Rhule indicated on Monday, some of it is the players just not doing their jobs.

“We had every opportunity,” Rhule said. “I’m always very careful what to call out and what not to, but my point to our guys is this: After the game, you guys asked me if I felt snakebit. No, I expect our cover two safety to play cover two, and I expect our cover three corner to stay deep. If we had done that in that game, those plays would have been eliminated…”

Some fans probably believe in a curse and we’ll see how Rhule feels after the Wisconsin game, but finding a way to win Saturday would be a great way to end it.
