Husker Big Red Daily: Jamal Rule doesn’t ‘play like a freshman, volleyball hosts Missouri, more

Coming out of non-conference play with a 3-0 record, one thing that should have Nebraska football fans feeling especially good about this team is running back Jamal Rule.

The three-star freshman has been a revelation for the Huskers. There was a bunch of offseason hype, yet so far, Rule has exceeded it. He started his Nebraska football career with at least 88 yards in all three games, with two 100-yard outings in his first three.

Last Saturday, he carried the ball 19 times for 155 yards. For the second week in a row, not a single carry went for negative yards. That’s a weapon. So is his ability to make people miss in the open field.

Heck, Pat Fitzgerald, the Michigan State head coach, compared Rule to Lawrence Phillips. I’m not going to go that far yet, but Ahman Green’s freshman rushing record seems in jeopardy.

Speaking about Rule on Tuesday, Nebraska OC Dana Holgorsen said: “He doesn’t play like a freshman, so we aren’t going to treat him like one.”

That’s music to my ears. Through three games, Nebraska is averaging 264 yards per game on the ground. Rule is averaging 109 yards per game.

Nebraska football will open 2027 season at Arrowhead

Just like in 2025, the Huskers will open the season at Arrowhead in Kansas City. This time, the opponent will be Miami (Ohio). The venue is cool. Scheduling a MAC team to play there isn’t. This feels like a miss to me.

Huskers will finish Wrigley Field match against Missouri

The Nebraska volleyball match at Wrigley Field was a great idea. Yet, outdoor matches just don’t work for volleyball, something Dani Busboom-Kelly made clear afterward.

Tonight, in Lincoln, Nebraska and Missouri will finish their match, which technically didn’t start. The score was still 0-0 when it was suspended.

The match will begin at 6 PM CST and will be televised on the Big Ten Network. It’s the last non-conference match for the Huskers as Big Ten play opens this weekend.
