Nebraska football has entered the mix for another transfer portal defender, plus more Nebraska Cornhuskers news.

Happy New Year, Nebraska Cornhuskers fans! It’s looking like it will be a good year for the Big Red on several fronts. Nebraska football has signed a five-star quarterback and two Elite-11 quarterbacks in fact.

The 2024 recruiting class has the chance to have a major impact on the future of Nebraska football. However, the Huskers are still working on their roster for next season and have been scouring the transfer portal for some reinforcements.

Nebraska is already over the scholarship numbers. They also don’t have a ton of needs in the transfer portal. Linebacker, wide receiver, and running back have been targets at this point and it sounds like players at all of those positions will be visiting next week.

Yet, Nebraska football has offered another FCS player in the transfer portal in North Dakota State defensive tackle Javier Derritt (6-foot-2, 280). The defender had 32 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks last season according to Huskers 247. He’s got 90 career tackles and 11 sacks.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t see defensive tackle as a huge need for Nebraska football but you can never have enough big guys. Derritt would add to the interior pass rush and if the Huskers were able to give Ty Robinson and Nash Hutchmacher a rest, that would be a good thing. It also wouldn’t surprise me to see someone like Derritt start in the base defense for the Huskers in three-man alignments.

USC, Michigan State, Kansas, and Minnesota are among the programs in the mix for the defensive tackle. We’ll see how this one progresses.

Nebraska football loses player to transfer portal

Linebacker Randolph Kpai has entered the transfer portal. The former four-star linebacker ranked in the top 300 overall in the 2021 class but didn’t see any action for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

This seems like a positive for both sides. Kpai, formerly, the top-ranked player in the state of South Dakota can find a situation with a better chance to play, while Nebraska gets another scholarship freed up.

Nebraska Cornhuskers get a key win in women’s basketball

The Nebraska women’s basketball team missed the NCAA tournament last season, but they are putting themselves in a good spot to make a return trip in 2024. On Sunday, the Huskers notched a key victory over Maryland, a team currently projected as a No. 6 seed by ESPN’s bracketology.

Nebraska improved to 2-0 in the Big Ten conference with an 87-81 victory. Nebraska outscored Maryland by eight points in the third quarter, then hung on to win in the fourth quarter. Alexis Markowski was dominant for the Nebraska Cornhuskers with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Natalie Potts pitched in with 17 points and 13 boards, while Jaz Shelley also had a double-double with 13 points and 11 assists.

The Huskers are part of a four-way tie for first place in the Big Ten (11-3, 2-0) along with Iowa, Michigan, and Indiana. Nebraska women’s basketball will play at Wisconsin Thursday, before hosting the Hoosiers next Sunday.

Trey Palmer woke up pissed

It wasn’t a great day for the Tampa Bay Bucs on Sunday as they dropped their game to the Saints 23-13. Yet, it was a solid day for Trey Palmer who led the Bucs in receiving with four receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Palmer has 37 receptions this season for Tampa Bay for 375 and three touchdowns. Not bad at all for the sixth-round pick.
