Nebraska baseball opened the final week of the season with the chance to win the Big Ten title and as we get set for the final day of the regular season, the Huskers’ hopes are still alive.
Following two wins over Michigan State, which includes an 11-3 thumping in game two, which eliminated the Spartans from the Big Ten tournament, Nebraska baseball is 16-7 in the Big Ten. The Huskers can’t finish worse than the No. 2 seed.
However, a Big Ten championship is possible and at this point, the scenario is simple. Nebraska baseball needs a win over Michigan State and the Huskers need Illinois to lose to Purdue. If that happens, the Huskers will win the Big Ten regular-season championship.
Nebraska baseball projected to make NCAA tournament
Regardless of what happens, Nebraska baseball has a strong chance of making the NCAA tournament according to the latest projections from D1 baseball. The Huskers are projected as a No. 2 seed in a regional with Oklahoma, which is projected as the No. 10 overall seed.
That’s not the worst place to be. But it’s probably a hint that even if the Huskers win the Big Ten title and the Big Ten tournament, they probably aren’t hosting a regional. They can thank all of their mid-week failures for that.
However, that shouldn’t cost the Huskers an NCAA tournament berth. Nebraska baseball has a solid resume and they did notch some important non-conference wins. They have also caught fire, winning four straight after losing back-to-back games.
Will Bolt’s club is starting to play their best at the right time and who knows, it could lead to a Big Ten championship on Saturday.
