Brett Maher was one of the greatest kickers and punters in Nebraska football history and signed with Broncos on Friday.

Nebraska football has a great tradition of sending kickers and punters to the National Football League. One of those names in recent years has been Brett Maher.

Maher spent the 2022 season with the Dallas Cowboys and for the most part, he was really successful outside of a playoff game in which he missed four extra points.

However, Maher is still getting another chance in the NFL and his accuracy last season, when he made 29-of-32 field goal attempts for the Cowboys (90.6 percent) is likely what will give him another chance to stick around in the NFL for another season.

A long-time Denver Broncos reporter, Mike Klis was one of the first to report the news of a one-year agreement between the Broncos and Maher, a former Nebraska football standout.

Maher gets another shot in the NFL

Maher managed the punting and kicking duties for Nebraska football in 2011 and was the Big Ten Kicker of the Year and the Big Ten Punter of the Year. He was a First-Team All-Big Ten selection for both positions, pretty much unanimously that season too. He also won the Big Ten Kicker of the Year award in 2012.

During his NFL career, the former Nebraska football standout bounced around a little between the NFL and the CFL. Yet, he’s spent four of the last five seasons in the NFL with various teams, including a stint in 2021 with the Saints.

Sean Payton was the head coach of the Saints then. Now, he’s the head coach of the Broncos. That connection makes sense plus Maher worked out for the Broncos last month.

It won’t be handed to the veteran but if he can kick for Denver the way he did during the regular season last year for Dallas, the former Kearney, Nebraska native should have a good shot at making the 53-man roster.
